At work: workers' compensation
Every Australian employer must be insured against workplace accidents. If you are injured at work, that insurance covers (part of) your treatment and wages. But only for what happens at work.
After work: your own responsibility
An accident at the weekend, appendicitis or a fall while surfing: workers' compensation does not apply. Medicare covers temporary workers only partly or not at all, and a hospital stay quickly costs thousands of dollars.
Repatriation and family
Need to return to the Netherlands after a serious accident, or does your family want to come to you? That is also outside the local schemes. Special ISIS covers repatriation and extra travel costs at actual cost.
Visa
For a working holiday visa, insurance is strongly recommended. On a sponsored work visa, the government may require Australian health insurance. Always check your visa conditions.
